Salmon timer: how long to bake salmon, cod and tilapia

Bake a 1-inch-thick salmon fillet for 12-15 minutes at 400°F (200°C). It is done when it reaches 145°F (63°C) in the thickest part and flakes easily with a fork.

The pan timer buzzes when it is time to flip, then again when the fish is done.

Thin tail pieces cook faster than the thick middle, so check them first.

Baking salmon

  1. Heat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a tray with foil or baking paper.
  2. Pat the fillets dry, brush with oil, and season with salt, pepper and lemon.
  3. Bake skin side down. Start checking a couple of minutes before the timer ends.
  4. Take it out when the middle flakes and is just opaque.

Cod and tilapia

White fish is leaner than salmon and dries out faster, so check it early. Tilapia fillets are thin and can also be pan-fried for 3-4 minutes per side. Cod is done when it turns from glassy to white and flakes apart.

A whole dinner

Rice takes longest, so start it first, then the fish, then the vegetables, each on its own named timer. Add "Salmon dinner" to Kitchen Timer (salmon, rice and broccoli)

Food safety: the USDA says fish is safe at 145°F (63°C).
