Rice timer: simmer, then rest
Rice on the stove has two steps: simmer with the lid on, then take it off the heat and let it rest with the lid still on. Kitchen Timer reminds you at both.
| Rice | Simmer | Rest | Start |
|---|---|---|---|
| White, long grain | 18 minutes | 10 minutes | Start white rice |
| Jasmine | 15 minutes | 10 minutes | Start jasmine rice |
| Basmati | 15 minutes | 10 minutes | Start basmati rice |
| Brown | 45 minutes | 10 minutes | Start brown rice |
How to cook rice on the stove
- Rinse the rice in a sieve until the water runs mostly clear.
- Put it in a pan with the amount of water on the package and a pinch of salt.
- Bring to the boil, turn the heat to the lowest setting, cover, and start the timer.
- When Kitchen Timer buzzes, turn the heat off. Keep the lid on.
- When it rings again, fluff the rice with a fork and serve.
Don't lift the lid while it simmers. The steam is what cooks the rice.
