Sweet potato timer: how long to bake or boil sweet potatoes
Bake a medium sweet potato at 400°F (200°C) for 45 to 60 minutes. To boil, cut it into 1-inch cubes and simmer for 10 to 15 minutes, or boil it whole for 25 to 35 minutes.
Baking
Scrub the sweet potatoes, prick each a few times with a fork, and bake on a foil-lined tray (they drip sugary juice).
| Sweet potato | Time at 400°F (200°C) | Start |
|---|---|---|
| Medium, about 8 oz | 45 to 60 minutes | Start 45 min |
| Large, 12 oz or more | 60 to 75 minutes | Start 1 h |
They are done when a knife slides in with no resistance and the skin looks puffed and wrinkled. If not, give them 10 more minutes.
Boiling
Put the sweet potatoes in cold, salted water, bring to the boil, and start the timer when it boils.
| Sweet potatoes | Time once boiling | Start |
|---|---|---|
| Peeled, 1-inch cubes | 10 to 15 minutes | Start 12 min |
| Whole, medium, skin on | 25 to 35 minutes | Start 30 min |
Roasted cubes
Toss 1-inch cubes with oil and salt, spread them on a tray in one layer, and roast at 425°F (220°C) for 25 to 30 minutes. The timer buzzes at 12 minutes so you can turn them. Start 25 min
