Egg timer: how long to boil eggs
For large eggs straight from the fridge, lowered into water that is already boiling:
| How you like it | Time | Start |
|---|---|---|
| Soft-boiled: runny yolk, just-set white | 6 minutes | Start 6 min |
| Jammy: soft, fudgy yolk | 8 minutes | Start 8 min |
| Hard-boiled: firm yolk | 11 minutes | Start 11 min |
Then move the eggs into iced water for 5 minutes. It stops the cooking and makes them easier to peel. Start the ice bath timer

How to boil eggs
- Bring a pan of water to a full boil. Use enough to cover the eggs by about an inch.
- Lower the eggs in gently with a spoon and start the timer.
- Keep the water at a steady, gentle boil.
- When the timer rings, move the eggs to a bowl of iced water.
- Peel under cold running water, starting from the wide end.
Adjusting the time
- Extra-large eggs: add about 1 minute.
- Medium eggs: take off about 1 minute.
- Eggs at room temperature: take off about 1 minute.
- Many eggs in a small pan: the water cools down more, so add a minute.
- Starting in cold water instead: bring to the boil, then time from when the water boils, about 1 to 2 minutes less than above.
Cooking eggs alongside other things?
Kitchen Timer runs as many timers as you like at once, each with its own name, so the eggs, the toast and the coffee each get their own alarm. Run several timers at once
