Chicken thighs, legs and wings: how long to bake them
Bake bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs for 35-45 minutes at 425°F (220°C). Boneless thighs need about 18-22 minutes at the same heat.
| Cut | Oven | Time | Start |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thighs, bone-in, skin-on | 425°F (220°C) | 35-45 minutes | Start 40 min |
| Thighs, boneless | 425°F (220°C) | 18-22 minutes | Start 20 min |
| Legs (drumsticks) | 425°F (220°C) | 35-45 minutes | Start 40 min |
| Wings | 400°F (200°C) | 40-45 minutes, flip once | Start wings |
| Wings in the air fryer | 380°F (190°C) | 22-25 minutes, shake halfway | Start air fryer wings |
The wing timers buzz when it is time to flip or shake, then again when they are done.
Getting crisp skin
- Pat the chicken very dry with paper towels. Wet skin steams instead of crisping.
- Rub with a little oil, salt and your seasoning.
- Lay the pieces skin side up on a lined tray with space between them. A rack on the tray helps wings crisp all over.
- Bake, then rest for 5 minutes before serving. Start the 5 min rest

When is it done?
The USDA says chicken is safe at 165°F (74°C). Thighs, legs and wings are dark meat, and many cooks take them to 175-185°F (79-85°C) because the meat turns more tender and pulls off the bone. Check the thickest part, away from the bone.
